An impact window is a window built to be hit. Two panes of glass are bonded to a clear inner layer and set in a reinforced aluminum frame, so when something comes through in a storm the glass cracks but stays in the opening.
The opening is what matters. Once wind gets inside a house it pushes up on the roof from underneath, and that is when real damage starts. Keeping every opening closed is the whole job.
In Lee and Collier counties the building code requires it. Both sit in a 150 mph design wind speed zone, and closer to the water it goes higher again. Impact windows are the version you never have to go outside and put up.
