An impact door is a door built to hold its frame when something hits it. The glass is laminated the same way an impact window is, but the real work is the frame and the hardware. A door is a hole in your wall with a moving part in it, and under storm pressure that is the weakest point on the whole elevation.
Fiberglass or aluminum. Fiberglass takes a wood grain finish and insulates better, aluminum takes the bigger openings and the coastal exposure. Glass runs from a small vision panel to a full lite, clear, obscured or decorative, and sidelights and transoms are rated as part of the same assembly.
Finishes are chosen per elevation. White, almond, bronze, black, and wood grains from light oak to dark walnut. Hardware in satin nickel, oil rubbed bronze, matte black or brass. Multipoint locks are standard on French and patio doors because they pull the slab tight at three points, not one.
Single or double, then the glass, then the hardware. A solid slab with a small vision panel sits at one end and a full lite decorative door with sidelights and a transom at the other. The other thing that moves it is whether the opening is still square, because a door that has dropped needs the frame put right first. We check that at the measure, not halfway through.
Doors carry the same Miami-Dade NOA or Florida Product Approval as the windows, rated for your address. Permits are pulled by us in Lee and Collier. The assembly is approved as a unit, so the numbers on your quote cover the frame and hardware too, not just the glass.

What are impact doors for Florida homes?
An impact door is a door built to hold its frame when something hits it. The glass is laminated the same way an impact window is, but the real work is the frame and the hardware. A door is a hole in your wall with a moving part in it, and under storm pressure that is the weakest point on the whole elevation.
So the entire assembly gets rated, not just the glass. Frame, slab, hinges, strike and threshold are approved together as one unit for your wind zone. Dropping a rated slab into an old frame does not give you a rated door, and in Lee or Collier it will not pass inspection.
Day to day it is the door finally sealing the way it should. No draft under the threshold, no water creeping in during a summer storm, and a multipoint lock that pulls the slab tight at three points instead of one. It looks better and it is far harder to force.

How does Sunshine State differ from other contractors?
We aren’t storm chasers. We are local owners working out of one shop in Bonita Springs, and we measure, permit, install and warranty every job with our own crew. Nothing is handed to a subcontractor who leaves the county after season.
Impact windows or hurricane shutters, which should I actually get?
Both meet code. Impact windows are permanent: nothing to put up, nothing to store, and they also help with noise, UV and security. Shutters and screens cost less up front and work well for lanais and large slider runs, but someone has to close them before a storm. Many homes use a combination of both.
